Learning from Local Place Plans: Community Land Scotland Event with Kinning Park Glasgow and WHALE Arts.

In May of 2023 Wester Hailes Community Trust had the pleasure of partaking in two events titled Learning from Local Place Plans. The first event, Learning from Local Place Plans: Community Realities and Reflections, was held at WHALE Arts and was catered towards communities interested in creating their own Local Place Plans. At this event the Trust and Kinning Park Glasgow shared our experiences creating and implementing Local Place Plans thus far, in addition to addressing topics such as easy wins and things to consider at the start, methodologies, process, outcomes and next steps, and what success means on the community’s own terms. The second event, Learning from Local Place Plans: Communities and Policy Making, was held at Kinning Park Complex in Glasgow and was catered towards policy makers and planning professionals. At this event, the Trust and Kinning Park shared our experiences creating and implementing local place plans thus far, discussed learning and success factors, and explored links to development plans, community plans, and community empowerment.

These events were the outcome of months of co-creation and collaboration between the Trust, the Community Land Scotland team, Kinning Park Glasgow, and WHALE Arts. The events were attended by community members, community bodies, planners, architects, council and Scottish government representatives, and policy makers from all across Scotland. The outcome was a highly rewarding knowledge exchange that hopefully helped and enlightened communities all across Scotland on how to go about creating their own local place plans. Community Land Scotland is currently putting together a small publication with the top tips and takeaways from the event which is set to be completed by August 2023.
